Bojanala Executive Mayor calls for more resources to create safer corridor

The Trans Kalahari Corridor National Committee in South Africa hosted yet another successful inter provincial law enforcement operation led by the North West and Gauteng law enforcement agencies, with the primary objective to promote compliance along the Trans Kalahari Corridor.

The operation further intended to promote safety, security and increase law enforcement visibility on the corridor.

In her address to appreciate the efforts and hard work displayed by law enforcement agencies and road safety officials at the operation, the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Magdeline Nondzaba called on TKC shakeholders to invest more resources to ensure the success of creating the safer environment along the corridor.

"The two Provinces, North West and Gauteng must equally avail resources for the success of these TKC National Law Enforcement Operations. We must make an impact and clean all criminal activities. This route must be the safest corridor.

We want to see more operators coming to use this road knowing that their cargo is safe and secured and their trucks and vehicles are able to transit in time.

This will automatically grow our economy and at that point we must start to see our communities, women and young people taking advantage of business opportunities that would be created along the corridor towards our borders," said Executive Mayor Nondzaba.

Gauteng Department of Community Safety, Director Mr Molefi Mokoka said it is important for the road users to comply with the road traffic legislations at all times. He called on the motorists to be patient and corporate with law enforcement during such operations.

The TKCNC RSA Chairperson Mr Suebel Mmono closed the operation by giving gratitude to all participating stakeholders for their efforts and continued commitment in ensuring law enforcement compliance on the corridor.

He said the National Committee through its Technical Committees will develop a year plan which will outline all activities on law enforcement operations, road safety awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagement including information sharing sessions.

"All those activities will be held under the umbrella of the TKC to achieve the objectives of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed by the Three Member States, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa," he said.

"The statistics recorded for this operation becomes a source for planning and deployment of law enforcement agencies along the corridor. Contravention of the road traffic legislations continues to be a worrying factor, from the over 400 vehicles stopped and checked, 267 summonses were issued for different contraventions. We will continue with these kind of operations to root out lawlessness," concludes Mmono.

The Bojanala District hosts three of the four local Municipalities that are along the TKC, starting from Madibeng, Rusternburg and Kgetlengrivier Local Municipalities.

The forth local Municipality in the longest stretch of the corridor on the North West side is the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality, which falls under the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.
